Open data portals across Europe: Slovakia creating value with high-quality datasets and smart features
Discover high-value datasets, metadata insights, and developer-friendly resources from data.gov.sk
Slovakia’s national open data portal, data.gov.sk, provides access to over 9 900 datasets, including more than 800 high-value datasets that support reuse in areas such as business, environment, and public services. The portal offers an overview of key data providers, enabling users to identify the most active institutions and explore local catalogues published across the country. This structure helps users navigate a decentralised data landscape and understand the breadth of information available.
Search and discovery functions are further enhanced through powerful filtering tools, which allow users to narrow results by legal form, licence type, keywords, update frequency, and more. A dedicated SPARQL endpoint allows for advanced querying of the national catalogue, supporting structured exploration of metadata and datasets. The portal also offers clear insight into metadata quality by provider, promoting transparency and accountability across institutions.
These features contributed to Slovakia’s impressive performance in the Open Data Maturity Report 2024, where the country ranked fifth among EU Member States in the ‘portal’ dimension — reflecting the platform’s strength in usability, accessibility, and functionality. For developers and more advanced users, the specialised Open Data MFSR portal — maintained by Slovakia’s Ministry of Finance — provides detailed API documentation and supports direct data integration into digital services. One example is an interactive map that presents a financial overview of how the public administration budget is spent across municipalities, offering a practical application of open data for transparency and local governance.
Together, these portals play a key role in expanding Slovakia’s open data ecosystem and enabling data-driven innovation. Explore the national open data catalogue, discover new datasets, and connect with trusted providers at data.gov.sk.
