Simpl programme: Updates from the community

New roadmap outlines improvements to the EU’s open-source platform for data sharing

The Commission’s Simpl programme, designed to support secure and trustworthy data sharing across sectors, has published a roadmap outlining development priorities for its open-source platform, Simpl-Open. The roadmap, which reflects feedback from the first Simpl Community Event held on Friday, 31 January, sets out planned improvements for 2025 and 2026 aimed at making the platform more user-friendly, automated and adaptable.

Since January 2025, a first Simpl-Open MVP (minimum viable product) has been available, offering core features such as onboarding participants, publishing service offerings, and managing access to data and infrastructure. The latest update, published in May 2025, presents a refined roadmap and confirms the next releases for June 2025. Planned improvements include automated onboarding and credential management, enhanced health monitoring, standardised API usage, and support for infrastructure decommissioning and deployment scripts. These updates focus on usability, automation and reducing manual work in managing data spaces.

As an open-source solution, Simpl-Open is a core component of the European Union’s strategy to build interoperable and sovereign digital infrastructure. It provides the foundation for the EU’s emerging data spaces by enabling seamless collaboration while ensuring transparency, security and control. By supporting standardised approaches to governance, data access and resource management, Simpl-Open contributes to a more connected and effective open data environment in Europe. These efforts are closely aligned with the ambitions of data.europa.eu, which brings together datasets from EU institutions, agencies and countries to support reuse, innovation and informed decision-making across sectors.

Simpl-Open continues to evolve in close collaboration with its user community. With each release, it takes a step closer to delivering a practical, scalable solution tailored to real-world data sharing needs. As digital cooperation grows across Europe, Simpl-Open is laying the groundwork for the data spaces of the future.
