The Interoperable Europe Act entered into force in 2024, creating a new framework to strengthen cooperation and interoperability across public administrations in the European Union. The regulation aims to ensure that digital public services can work seamlessly across borders, making it easier for citizens, businesses and authorities to exchange information and access services. By supporting the EU's Digital Decade objectives, the act is expected to improve the delivery of public services while reducing administrative burdens.
The act introduces several key measures to support cross-border interoperability. These include the creation of an Interoperable Europe Board, which brings together Member States and EU institutions to coordinate interoperability efforts, and mandatory interoperability assessments for new or updated public sector IT systems. In addition, innovation initiatives such as GovTech and other regulatory sandboxes will help test and scale new digital solutions which can be shared on the Interoperable Europe Portal.
Effective data sharing between public administrations relies on common standards, formats and governance frameworks. By promoting the reuse of interoperable solutions and more consistent approaches to data exchange, the Interoperable Europe Act helps create more accessible and connected public sector data ecosystems. This supports the objectives of the European Data Strategy and helps unlock the value of public sector information across Europe.
