Best practices for Data on the Web

World Wide Web Consortium runs consultation on best data practices

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an international community where various stakeholders work together to develop Web Standards for and with the users of the web. The Data on the Web Best Practices Working Group has recently published its primary document in which it sets out recommendations for the publication and usage of data on the Web. To further enhance this document, the working group now invites interested parties to comment and contribute to its content.

The document provides a number of Best Practices on how to deal with Data on the Web. For example that data should be discoverable and understandable by humans and machines. Where data from others is used in an application, it should be discoverable and the data publisher should be recognised, facilitating interaction between publishers and consumers. The work of W3C is closely related to the Share-PSI project funded by the European Commission which addressed the best use of public sector information. In this project, a set of high level policy-related best practices and guides were formulated as well. Although the origin of this project is distinctively European, it is likely to be applicable worldwide.
