Open address data helps Vienna’s building owners check their next steps

A free application combines official addresses with information entered by users to help check building-logbook requirements

Understanding which rules apply to a building can take time, especially when requirements depend on when it was built. Vienna’s Bauwerksbuch Fristencheck Wien offers property owners and managers a starting point. The free application helps users check whether their building may need a statutory building logbook and which deadlines may apply. A building logbook documents the building and sets out inspections of safety-related parts.

Developed by a Vienna-based building specialist, the application combines information entered by users with rules based on the Vienna Building Code. Users provide the construction year and can add details about the building’s size and existing documentation. While it does not replace an individual legal or technical assessment, the check gives an initial indication of the relevant requirements or deadlines.

Open data supports the address-checking step. The application reuses the City of Vienna’s Adressen Standorte Wien dataset, allowing users to select and check an official address. The construction year comes from the user, rather than the address dataset. The example shows how a public dataset can support one practical part of a service, alongside other information, to make a task easier.
