Supporting transparency and innovation: Highlighting Slovenia’s open data portal

Showcasing Slovenia’s comprehensive platform for discovering and reusing public sector data

Slovenia’s national open data portal, podatki.gov.si, serves as the central online platform for accessing public sector information across the country. Managed by the Ministry of Public Administration and supported technically by the Ministry for Digital Transformation, the portal brings together datasets from many Slovenian agencies into one accessible location. It is designed to help users explore, reuse, and combine open data for research, applications, visualisations, and public value projects.

The portal provides a wide range of functionalities and tools that make it easy to find and work with datasets. Users can browse more than 8 000 datasets covering topics such as population, economy, health, transport, and more. This includes contributions from major Slovenian institutions such as the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia, ministries, municipalities, and specialised agencies. The portal also offers filtering options by sector, format, organisation type, and license to help locate relevant sources quickly.

One of the portal’s distinctive features is its commitment to openness and interoperability. Built using open-source technology shared with the UK’s data portal and the European Data Portal, it acts as a central metadata catalogue and a repository of machine-readable datasets. Where data is already published elsewhere, the portal links directly to the external source, ensuring comprehensive coverage whilst avoiding duplication.

Users are encouraged to explore the portal to discover datasets, access APIs, and reuse information for applications, visualisations, and research projects. Whether supporting civic innovation, informing policy, or enabling data-driven services, the Slovenian open data portal offers engaging resources.
