The European Green Deal: Climate ambition under pressure whilst keeping data central

Updates on targets, simplified rules and the growing role of open data

The European Green Deal remains the EU’s main roadmap for becoming climate-neutral by 2050, but in recent months this ambition has become contested. While the European Commission continues to push climate action, several targets and rules are being revised amid economic pressures, geopolitical instability and competitiveness. Regardless, the core objective of significantly cutting greenhouse gas emissions and reaching net zero by 2050 remains legally binding.

One of the most significant recent developments is the debate around the proposed 2040 emissions reduction target. The Commission has put forth a new reduction goal, but negotiations among Member States and the European Parliament have already led to calls for more flexibility, particularly for energy-intensive industries and transport. At the same time, parts of the Green Deal legislation are being simplified, including sustainability reporting rules, to reduce administrative activities for businesses.

Despite political pushback, data continues to play a critical role in the Green Deal’s implementation. Topics such as climate targets, pollution limits, and energy transition policies all depend on reliable, comparable, and reusable data. The EU is therefore investing in initiatives such as the European Green Deal data space, which aims to make environmental and climate data easier to find and use across borders and sectors.

By linking policy goals to open data, the EU enables researchers, journalists, and citizens to track progress, hold institutions accountable and contribute to a more transparent green transition.
