Join the EU Datathon 2020
Tomorrow, the 12 shortlisted teams will compete in the online final of the EU Datathon 2020 – an EU open data competition. The pre-selection selected them out of the 121 submitted proposals, the highest number of entries since the first EU Datathon in 2017. The 12 finalists are expected to present up-and-running applications that use open data made available by EU institutions, agencies and bodies. Each application should address one of the four key challenges set by the European Commission: Challenge 1: ‘ A European Green Deal’ Challenge 2: ‘ An economy that works for people’ Challenge 3: ‘ A
Recap: Future of Open Data Portals: the EDP’s view
Last Tuesday, 6 October, the European Data Portal (EPD) hosted its first webinar in the new series titled “ The Future of Open Data Portals”. This first webinar focused on the EDP view with Professor Elena Simperl, discussing topics such as: Activities of the EDP; Findings of the research conducted by Elena and her team at the University of Southampton on “ The Sustainability of (Open) Data Portal Infrastructures”; and Importance of moving from a data-centric approach to a user-centric perspective. The PowerPoint presentation is live. Missed the webinar? It is now live on the EDP’s YouTube
The City of Issy-les-Moulineaux Publishes Financial Report
As one of the earliest open data adopters in France, the city of Issy-les-Moulineaux decided to publish its financial budget in 2011 to increase transparency. To achieve this, they built a dedicated website to present the data in a user-friendly way by simply embedding information and graphs coming from the portal. Since then, every year the city publishes its financial report onto their portal and update all graphs. The city of Issy-les-Moulineaux is one of the over 650 use cases published on the European Data Portal. If you are aware of another inspiring use case, share your experience and
The Drivers of Data Sharing
Save the date and join the European Data Portal (EDP) and Support Centre for Data Sharing (SCDS) next Data Talk “ The Drivers of Data Sharing” on Wednesday 14 October at 13:00 CET. The EDP and SCDS host Data Talk sessions every fortnight on topics related to open data and data sharing, free of charge. Everyone is welcome to join these discussions to learn more from the speakers and to share their experiences. The team will be joined by Laia Pujol from Lisbon Council to discuss the analytical report “ From Regulation to Adoption: The Drivers of Data Sharing” and her research on factors behind

InfringEye tracks EU infringement procedures
If Member States do not comply with EU law, they risk incurring sanctions. InfringEye is a tool developed by Openpolis that aims to make it easier for journalists, stakeholders and citizens to track EU infringement procedures against Member States. InfringEye helps to put data into context and enables users to easily find EU infringement procedure data. The tool consists of four aspects: A complete database of past and ongoing EU infringement procedures; Datasets highlighting key aspects related to the infringements; Ready-made freely available visualisations; and A thorough report providing a
The JRC proposes an API framework for governments
The digital transformation of society obliges governments to evolve towards increasingly complex digital environments. Although these environments require strong coordination efforts, the integration of digital components is often done on an ‘ad hoc’ basis, disregarding the potential value-added for the whole digital environment. Application programming interfaces (APIs) are the connective nodes of digital components that can enable the necessary synergistic integration. The Joint Research Centre (JRC), part of the European Commission, created a framework for a cohesive API adoption in
CERN releases new batch of data from a Large Hadron Collider experiment
The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector of particles and the CERN Open Data team have been collaborating to publish all proton-proton collision data recorded by CMS at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) since 2011. LHC data are unique and are of interest to the scientific and academic community. CMS has therefore committed to releasing its research data openly, with all data being made available 10 years after recording them; the embargo gives the scientists working on CMS adequate time to analyse the data themselves. The first batch of data was published in 2016 and the team recently published
Google adds search trends on COVID-19 symptoms to the Open Data Repository
During the current global COVID-19 crisis, many organisations and institutions freely published their data in order to support the combat against the pandemic. However, lack of easily re-usable high-quality data has posed a significant challenge. A large share of the publicly available data is scattered, incomplete or compiled in many different formats. In March 2020, Google launched the COVID-19 Public Dataset Program, where they offer free access to critical information on the virus through the COVID-19 Open Data Repository. The aim of this effort is to monitor, control and support the COVID
