Open Data from an international perspective
According to a new publication by the Konrad Adenauer foundation, data can be seen as the building blocks of the digitisation of the world. Each one of these building blocks brings in part of the information needed to complete the digital house. The reconstruction of Emilia-Romagna
In May 2012, the Italian region Emilia-Romagna suffered two major earthquakes causing multiple casualties and widespread damages. To reconstruct the affected regions, multiple programmes were launched with various stakeholders involved. However, due to the plurality of all these programmes, it was sometimes difficult to keep track of who is responsible, which company does what and how the money flows. Are you into Data-Driven news production?
The analysis of Big or Open Data creates many benefits and insights, for example in the field of transparency when journalists use the information as a source for news. To support this form of data-driven news production, the European Commission launched a call for proposals to find suitable projects for funding. Cologne revised its Data Portal
In 2012 the German city of Cologne started by providing their Open Data on a Portal. With continuous growth and improvements in the meantime, after five years it was time for a major revision. The portal is being updated in two phases, of which the first has just been launched and the second will follow this autumn. The recently presented first update focussed primarily on improving the design and usability of the portal, while also bringing the DKAN architecture up to date. Scaling up the European Data Economy
In the last few days of the Dutch EU Presidency the annual European Data Forum took place on 29 and 30 June. The iconic Evoluon building in Eindhoven, built to celebrate 75 years of Philips, now formed the perfect venue to discuss the future of Europe's Data Economy. During the two-day conference, representatives from the public and private sector came together to exchange thoughts on how to harness the power of Big and Open Data. Deutsche Bahn opens traffic schedules
Deutsche Bahn, the railway company of Germany, embraces Open Data and makes its time table accessible via API. After having experimented first with opening their data to selected partners such as Google, Deutsche Bahn now publishes its schedule under an open licence. For the moment the API only contains a segment of the Deutsche Bahn database, namely long distance traffic, but this will grow during the upcoming period. Open Data in Switzerland
On 14 June Swiss Open Data Activists, Data Providers and programmers gathered for their annual conference, organised by the association opendata.ch. As it was the first time for the conference to take place in the French-speaking part of Switzerland "Romandy", the programme focused on Open Data-experiences from this region and was partly in French. During the conference, participants presented and discussed a wide range of topics form machine-learning to transparent voting and the various Open Data initiatives in Switzerland. Paris plans to become Open by Default
On the 16 th of June, the region ' Ile de France' home to Paris, adopted a report on how to truly open up their public data. To underline the political support, this must be done by the introduction of the "Open by Default" dogma in its data policy. To oversee this process, a Chief Data Officer or Data Director will be appointed. The ' Ile de France' region already has an Open Data policy since 2013 but according to regional Head of Digital Service Innovation, Christophe Libert, this policy has remained too modest in its implementation.
