On 27 October 2022, the data.europa academy held a webinar on the topic ‘Trends in Geospatial data`. The aim of the webinar was to investigate current emerging trends in the geospatial community and discuss which trends, standards, or ideas are most relevant today. This should eventually facilitate the identification of further opportunities for data.europa.eu.

After a brainstorming session on current trends in geospatial community, the webinar went on to discuss two interesting topics for future of data.europa.eu, modernising Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe (INSPIRE) and its role in building smart cities.

In the first part of the webinar, Antje Kügeler (Spatial Data Infrastructure consultant at con terra) focused on modernising INSPIRE by moving towards open data. Antje underlined the need to ´leave the geospatial bubble’ by providing geoinformation for other experts of the domain and by making geospatial data more native to the web, as well as learning from mainstream technology and design patterns. After mentioning the important role that High Value Datasets can play in this regard, the speaker touched upon topics such as OGC API[Z(2]  families and the reuse of the Open Data Directive in the domain of geospatial data.

In the second part of the webinar, Dr. Simon Jirka (Managing Director at 52o N) deep dived into the role of geospatial information for smart cities. He highlighted concepts such as dynamic traffic flow optimisation, and upgraded waste disposal facilities based on open geospatial data at EU level. He also talked about the importance of high strategic value intelligent information to manage existing resources in a smart way and to improve the quality of life.

To make the webinar more interactive, in between presentations, the audience was given the chance to ask questions and provide comments via Sli.do. In the final part of the webinar, in particular, participants were asked to discuss the challenges and opportunities in geospatial trends for data.europa.eu. Suggestions and comments can be found in the transcript of the webinar chat.

If you are interested to know more about the webinar, in the dedicated data.europa academy page you can find the recording of the webinar and consult the slides presented during the session.

Moreover, don´t miss the next data.europa academy webinar on ´Geospatial harvesting on data.europa.eu` that will take place on Tuesday 29 November at 10.00 – 11.00 CET!
