The Quantum Europe Strategy: Building the future of technology with security and trust

Uniting science, infrastructure, and skills to power Europe’s quantum future

Europe is working on a new era focused on technological leadership by utilising quantum. Quantum technology is powered by physics and looks at the composition of particles in time and space. The European Commission is stimulating the emergence of a strong, unified quantum ecosystem in which quantum research can be conducted following the highest standards. Quantum technologies will use elements of physics to help us solve complex global challenges related to health, energy, logistics, and finance.

To position Europe as a global leader in quantum by 2030, the Commission has adopted a Quantum Europe Strategy. Although, currently, Europe is facing challenges when it comes to translating innovation capabilities into strong market opportunities, this strategy’s aim is to allow the EU to become a strong quantum leader, which helps startup growth whilst maintaining scientific leadership.

The strategy is composed of 5 main areas known as: Research and Innovation, Quantum Infrastructures, Strengthening the Quantum Ecosystem, Space and Dual-Use Quantum Technologies (Security and Defence), and Quantum Skills. By focusing on these areas, the European quantum ecosystem can ensure all grounds are covered to establish a fully integrated and connected network and become leaders in the field of quantum.

The Quantum Europe Strategy emphasises the importance of consolidation of information about quantum science and industrial transformation. In this, open data can play a role in data sharing and enabling collaborative research. Portals such as data.europa.eu can help in compiling useful information, such as datasets about quantum to further enhance relevant knowledge and help realise the strategy by 2030.

Whether you are a researcher, policymaker, or entrepreneur, now is a great time to understand quantum and how this strategy can help you. Use the resources available to connect and join the conversation about Europe’s quantum journey.
