Open Data helps to understand nature's unrevealed processes

The University of Helsinki uses open spatial data to gain valuable insights on soil

Open remotely sensed data allows access to areas in the wilderness that are almost unreachable for humans. The BioGeoClimate Modelling Lab from the Department of Geosciences and Geography at the University of Helsinki (Finland) applied the newest technologies in their recent soil moisture study. Combining a highly accurate airborne laser scanner and field research, the team of doctorates analysed the tundra with a totally new approach.

The methodology received international recognition. The Pretorian University (South Africa) recently started a collaboration with the BioGeoClimate Modelling Lab applying the research methodology to gain more insights on the Drakensberg, a massive escarpment in South Africa. All Data is open, provided by the National Land Survey of Finland. Find out more about the study or browse through more innovative initiatives related to Open Data in Finland here.
