Interoperability in Europe: Supporting semantics through the SEMIC support centre

A central hub helping public administrations share, reuse and align data across Europe

Semantic interoperability is essential for enabling public administrations to exchange information effectively, improve digital public services, and support cross-border cooperation. The SEMIC support centre, part of the wider Interoperable Europe initiative, provides a central hub where organisations can learn, collaborate, and adopt shared standards for data modelling and exchange. Designed to help administrations advance on their interoperability journey, it builds in the principles of the Interoperable Europe Act and brings experts together to co-create practical solutions.

The support centre offers a range of services, including community-developed data models, pilots that test emerging approaches, and a growing toolkit that supports the creation, validation, and reuse of semantic specifications. These tools and guidelines are complemented by a rich Knowledge Hub which features training, webinars, and studies that can aid public administrations in staying up to date with new trends in data management and interoperability. Together, these resources make it easier to adopt harmonised standards and strengthen collaboration across Member States.

The work of the SEMIC support centre is closely linked to the broader open data ecosystem, particularly in promoting the publication of interoperable machine-readable datasets. SEMIC helps ensure that Europe’s data spaces, portals, and registries can work together. This alignment is essential for reusing data across borders, reducing duplication, and supporting evidence-based policymaking at EU, national, and local levels.

Public administrations, policymakers, and technical experts interested in improving their interoperability practices are encouraged to explore the support centre’s resources and engage with the SEMIC community by adopting shared models, taking part in pilots, or contributing best practices, stakeholders can play an active role in strengthening the foundations of Europe’s digital public services.
