Open data for peace: Marking the International Day of Non-Violence

How transparent and accessible data can support dialogue, understanding and informed decision-making

Yearly on 2 October, the world marks the International Day of Non-Violence. Originally established by the United Nations to celebrate the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the day is used to promote a culture of peace, tolerance and understanding. The day highlights the importance of resolving conflicts through dialogue rather than force, while encouraging governments, organisations and citizens to work together towards more peaceful societies. The observance remains highly relevant for communities across Europe and beyond as they seek evidence-based solutions to complex social challenges.

First proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007, the International Day of Non-Violence serves as an opportunity to raise awareness about the universal value of non-violent resistance. Education, public engagement and access to trustworthy information all play an important role in preventing misinformation, reducing tensions and strengthening democratic participation. By supporting transparency and accountability, public institutions can help foster greater trust between citizens and decision makers.

Researchers, journalists and policymakers can use open datasets to analyse social trends, monitor inequalities, track public spending, and better understand the factors that influence peaceful and inclusive societies. On the European Data Portal, users can explore thousands of datasets from European institutions and turn data into  evidence-based insights.

To mark the International Day of Non-Violence, explore the wealth of knowledge available through the European Data Portal to foster more inclusive and peaceful communities across Europe.
