Sniffer Bike - a project to track air quality in Utrecht
Utrecht encourages cyclists to choose healthier routes by equipping bikes with air quality sensors
The province of Utrecht is now equipping bikes with air quality sensors to create Sniffer Bikes that help to map healthier routes within the city. This is a pilot project that has been scaled up to cover the entire province of Utrecht for one year and includes a mobile application that enables cyclists to track air quality throughout the city and choose healthier routes to follow.
Sniffer Bike is a particulate matter (PM) sensor that was developed by SODAQ and Civity in collaboration with the Utrecht Province. The sensor aims to help combat air pollution and growing environmental concerns by collecting data about particles in the air - including PM, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), and temperature - to enable users to cycle on routes with better air quality. The central component for consolidating and analysing the data collected by Sniffer Bike is the Context Broker. Context Broker is part of the European Commission's Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Programme and aims to make data-driven decisions in real-time at the right time.
