Croatian Open Data based applications
The national Open Data portal of Croatia now lists new applications based on Open Data. The most recent 2018 app is HAKmap. Looking for a gas station, hospital or one of Croatia's national parks? This interactive map-based solution provides drivers with valuable road and facility information. The interactive map of HAK utilises cartographic tools and (public) data. Developers from Infinum used various technological solutions to make the app compatible with the online map services of major providers such as Google, Microsoft and Zagreb's Mireo. Poland speeds up governmental Open Data project
The Polish Ministry of Digital Affairs is in the process of implementing its programme "Open data - access, standards and education". The project will generate solutions that increase the availability and quality of Open Data and its re-use. This entails extended APIs and the expansion of the national Open Data portal. With this, further efforts are being made to facilitate the search, analysis and use of Open Data in Poland. What happens when peace analyses are being armed with Open Data?
SaferGlobe, an independent peace and security think-tank, released the Finnish Arms Control Report. This report aims to reach greater transparency in arms trade, while at the same time develop knowledge in international arms control. SaferGlobe believes that monitoring and controlling arms export helps to mitigate and even prevent conflicts. The report is presented by an interactive map. This visualisation provides an overview of the destinations to which Finland exports its arms and in what direction global arms trade is developing. Spain publishes its national Open Data portal's source code
The source code of the Spanish national Open Data portal data.gob.es has been released. This Open Data platform integrates a Drupal content management system with CKAN Open Data repository software and seven CKAN extensions developed by the Spanish government. These specific elements are available via Github, allowing other Open Data portals to learn from one of the leading Open Data portals in Europe. At the same time, this provides an incentive for further national Open Data portal owners to undertake steps and publish their portal's source code.

The word 'openness' has a strong positive connotation. Open governments, Open Data, open societies. Being open is seen as a beneficial characteristic, especially in a societal context. During the year, the portal has witnessed an impressive growth in a diverse number of fields. The number of Open Data sets has exceeded half a million; metadata is now translated into 18 languages. Right on track?
Right on track? The Finnish Transport Agency Liikennevirasto has released information on train locations as Open Data. These datasets show, for example, when trains have arrived at a particular station and at which section of a track trains are currently located. The Open Data from the Finnish Transport Agency is used to develop for instance train warning applications. These applications alert citizens about crossing trains. Webinar about the re-use of Open Data in Italy
Data in general and Open Government Data in particular are regarded as the 'fuel' necessary to power the digital services that millions of citizens use daily. The report Creating Value Through Open Data published by the European Data Portal estimated that in the European Union alone Open Data can generate an economic return of EUR 325 billion over the 5-year period 2016-2020, creating 25.000 new jobs. Based on these premises, an online seminar on the re-use of Open Data will be organised on 27 June in Italy. This webinar aims at deepening the understanding of the economic impact of Open Data
