New EU public procurement data portal
The value of Open Data proves itself in many different ways. Next to economic benefits and improving public sector performance, Open Data triggers social and political developments. This democratic pillar of Open Data is envisioned by a newly launched European public procurement data portal. The portal is one of the initiatives of the EU Horizon 2020 project DIGIWHIST (the Digital Whistleblower). The portal, Opentender.eu, facilitates your search and analysis of procurement data. Audio Data to retrieve memories
Recently, the BBC published their archive of sound effects. The sounds are ranging from the acoustic atmosphere of Bangkok Riverside to various birds' noises or the sounds of a café in Paris. The data is free to use for education, research and non-commercial purposes. The actual driver behind the publication of sound effects is the BBC Reminiscence Archive (RemArc). Launch of the Open Data Charter Measurement Guide
The Open Data Charter is a collaboration of governments and experts founded in 2015 aiming at opening data. Together with the civil society and experts around the world they established principles on how to publish data. Over 70 governments and organisations have joined the movement. The six principles are: Open by Default; Timely and Comprehensive; Accessible and Usable; Comparable and Interoperable; For Improved Governance & Citizen Engagement; For Inclusive Development and Innovation. Ukraine: Open Data could provide a €1.16 billion boost to the Ukrainian economy
Open Data contributed almost 600 million Euro to the Ukrainian economy last year, and the direct and indirect benefits could rise to over 1.16 billion Euro by 2025, according to the study by the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) in partnership with the London-based Open Data Institute. Public health data to save lives: An example from the US
The Health and Human Services Department (HHS) is determined to use data to save lives and improve government operations. The department is working towards an open, transparent government, allowing researchers, academics, and entrepreneurs to develop solutions the government otherwise would not be able to benefit from. Over the past years, HHS released more than 1,500 data sets on HealthData.gov, held a cross-sector code-a-thon to fight the opioid epidemic and is now developing an enterprise wide data strategy to further support developers in innovating health solutions.
