Learning with Open Data
Northern Ireland a competition was launched for innovative ideas on how to use Open Data for educational purposes. The competition welcomes all applicants who use (Northern Irish) Open Data in the development of new education tools for schools, either in primary or secondary education. To fully exploit the breadth of Open Data, proposals from all subjects of the Northern Irish curriculum are welcome. The best idea(s) will be awarded with up to £20,000 to develop their ideas into a working app. The competition is divided in two phases correlating with the development stage of the idea. In the

We Connect Data' and 'Casius Bvba' win €20,000
While the Netherlands launches an Open Data award, in another country Open Data winners are announced. This competition took place in Flanders (Belgium) and went looking for the most innovative Open Data application. With this award, the Flemish government wants to support companies and start-ups in the creation of new and innovative applications using Open Data. The winners received a price of €20,000 and were showcased during the 'Trefdag van Informatie Vlaanderen' event in June. 'We Connect Data' won the competition with the project GoOV. DACHLI Open Government meeting in Berlin
In 2012, the German speaking countries Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Lichtenstein decided to work closer together on Open Government and Open Data. By signing the "Diskussionspapier zur Open Government Data-Zusammenarbeit in der DACHLI-Region" (Discussion paper on Open Government Data-collaboration in the DACHLI region) the countries agreed to organise annual meetings and share best practices. After rotating locations of the previous meetings, the annual meeting returns to where the founding paper was signed, Berlin; where the meeting is scheduled for 9-10 May. During this gathering

Spaghetti Open Data #SOD16
In two weeks, the annual Spaghetti Open Data event will take place in Trento, Italy. The first day will be in the form of a conference; amongst other representatives, the European Data Portal will also be presented. The next day will be dedicated to a civic hackathon whereby also participants are welcome. Europe's blueprint for Cloud services
On 19th April, the European Commission presented its blueprint for cloud-based services and world-class data infrastructure to ensure science, business and public services reap benefits of big data revolution. This will be underpinned by the European Data Infrastructure, deploying the high-bandwidth networks, large scale storage facilities and super-computer capacity necessary to effectively access and process large datasets stored in the cloud. Public Consultation on the ePrivacy Directive Review
The ongoing technological developments require the European privacy policies to constantly follow and adapt to new situations. This is also the case for the ePrivacy Directive which sets out rules on how providers of electronic communication services, such as telecoms companies and Internet Service Providers, should manage their subscribers' data. For this reason, the ePrivacy Directive is currently under review in preparation of a new legislative proposal on ePrivacy. El Recibo wins IT4gov Greece
In January we wrote about the competition launched by the Greek Ministry of Interior and Administrative Reconstruction. The objective of the competition was to find innovative services which are not already made available and aimed at structuring new alternative models. These services had to simplify procedures in public administration and find effective eGovernment services to offer pioneering solutions, providing usable services to citizens and businesses. To mark the end of this competition, a festive and informative ceremony was organised last week during which the winner was announced
