European business wallets: A new step toward simpler digital operations

A simplified solution to reducing paperwork and supporting business across Europe

Companies all across Europe spend significant time on administrative tasks, inhibiting focus on innovation and slowing cross-border activity. To address this, the European Commission has created European Business Wallets, a harmonised digital solution designed to simplify how businesses identify themselves, authenticate themselves and exchange data across Europe. The initiative was formed as part of the Commission’s 2025 Digital Package and aims to reduce administrative burden for many organisations.

The Business Wallet will enable companies to manage their key documents digitally, including licences, permits, and certificates, as well as sign or seal documents with full legal effect. Business can also delegate legal actions to authorised representatives and communicate securely with public authorities. By providing one digital identity and channel, the wallet is expected to boost efficiency, particularly for small and medium-sized businesses.

This development aligns with the wider shift towards open data and interoperable digital public services. The wallet builds on the technical architecture of the EU Digital Identity wallet and supports cloud-based, cross-border data use. By enabling trusted document exchange and standardised formats, the Wallet promotes easier access to information and encourages innovative digital services built on open, verifiable data sources.

Organisations who are interested in the proposal or ongoing policy developments can follow updates via the Commission’s dedicated page of European Business Wallets. Businesses are encouraged to explore how this future tool can support digital transformation and prepare for smoother cross-border operations.
