A history of datasets: Tracking change and ensuring reliable reuse

A new feature on the European Data Portal enhances transparency and citation of open data

A new dataset versioning feature on the European Data Portal now allows users to track how datasets evolve over time. Each time a dataset is harvested or when a data provider updates its metadata, a new version is automatically created. This ensures that users can access datasets exactly as they were at a specific moment, supporting accurate use and reuse of data across Europe. The feature responds to a growing need for reliability and traceability in open data publication.

With versioning in place, users can select and download a dataset from a particular point in time, such as financial sanctions data from previous months. This is especially important for research, policy analysis, and reporting where correct citation of a dataset version is essential. In addition, the feature enables users to compare two versions of the same dataset, clearly showing what has been added, removed, or modified between updates.

This feature aids in supporting the EU’s commitment to high-quality open data, as outlined on the European Data Portal. By making dataset changes visible and traceable, the feature supports transparency and reproducibility. Make sure to explore the version history feature and discover how it can support your work with open data.
