Learn about the insights of our webinar ‘Geospatial harvesting on data.europa.eu’

The webinar focused on geospatial data on our portal and how it is harvested

On 29 November 2022, the data.europa academy conducted a webinar on the topic ‘Geospatial harvesting on data.europa.eu’. The primary aim of the webinar was to introduce the type, origin and services of geospatial data that can be found on data.europa.eu and to explain the process of harvesting it.

In the first part of the webinar, Dr. Thore Fechner (Head of Team for Open Data and Copernicus at con terra) discussed the ample amount of geospatial data that is available on the portal and walked through the entire process of geospatial harvesting from a geo-catalogue to the portal. He explained how metadata is harvested from open data catalogues and geo-catalogues along with  INfrastructure for SPAtial InfoRmation in Europe (INSPIRE). He observed, that ‘we do not only look at INSPIRE data from geo-catalogues, but we also collect non-INSPIRE compliant or non-conformance via metadata from national geoportals` to expose the value of this data. Moreover, he added that geo-services, geo-data and data with direct or indirect spatial information can be found on the portal.

In the second part of the webinar, Jan van Zadelhoff (Software Engineer for open data and Copernicus at con terra) explained how the metadata is collected from the geo-catalogues and made available on data.europa.eu. In addition, he clarified the role of eTranslation, an online machine translation service provided by the European Commission (EC): ‘While there is a lot of metadata already available, it is not always in the right format for data.europa.eu. So, geospatial harvesting component takes the available data and translates it to a format that is understandable by the harvesting mechanism of data.europa.eu’.

The webinar concluded with an interactive Q&A session and the audience was given a chance to provide their feedback via Sli.do.
