Open Data Day is an international annual event where data enthusiasts gather to connect and build new solutions to complex social issues by using open data. The event takes place globally and includes talks, seminars, hackathons, demonstrations, trainings or the announcement of open data releases or other milestones in open data. This year, Open Data Day 2019 is supported by Hivos, Mapbox, Frictionless Data for Reproducible Research and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom and will have four tracks: Follow public money flows with a focus on Open Contracting. The Latvian open data portal was launched in 2017 and provides users with free access to various government data from Latvian state institutions and other organisations with state functions. Users can browse through datasets by keywords, institutions or categories such as Education & Sport, Health, Environment and Transportation. In addition, the portal is based on open source technologies, including CKAN Open data catalogue. Amazon launches its Sustainability Data Initiative
At the end of 2018, Amazon launched its Amazon Sustainability Data Initiative. The initiative aims to promote sustainability research, innovation and to facilitate data accessibility and availability to interested parties. In addition, the initiative wants to democratise access to data by making it available on Amazon Web Services (AWS), to develop new cloud access technologies and to encourage the development of communities that can exploit the benefits from increased access to shared datasets. Introducing the new Open Data and PSI Directive
On 22 January, representatives from the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union (EU) and the European Commission reached an agreement on a revised Directive to facilitate the availability and re-use of public sector data. The new Open Data and Public Sector Information (PSI) Directive will be in full compliance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation and is based also on the feedback that the European Commission received after launching a review of the PSI Directive in 2018. Irish National Transport Authority updates an important API
On 2 January 2019, the National Transport Authority in Ireland provided an update on the available of the Real Time Passenger Information (RTPI) API to the Irish open data portal. The RTPI system helps passengers to plan more efficient trips by providing them with up-to-date information on the departure and arrival times, as well as service disruptions and delays, on different modes of transport ranging from trains to buses. Zwemwater: A Dutch service to find swimming sites
Zwemwater is a website and application that shows users different outdoor swimming locations across the Netherlands. The application provides information about the available services at different swimming locations and specifies if the water is clean and if the location is safe. This information is based on data collected from water authorities and the Department of Waterways in the Netherlands. If a swimming location is not clean or safe, Zwemwater will advise users not to go to there and find a different swimming site. Danish municipalities spend considerable resources in collecting and processing data to increase openness and transparency within Denmark.
